Could you introduce yourself?!
Hi, my name is Conor Treanor. As well as being a Chartered Physiotherapist, I'm a qualified Sports and Exercise Scientist.
What / where did you study?
Being from Monaghan, I attended Edenmore NS before going to Beech Hill College in Monaghan Town for my secondary school education.
After completing my Leaving Cert, I got accepted into the University of Limerick where I completed a Bachelors of Science in Sports and Exercise. I really enjoyed my time as an Undergrad in UL, and returned there to pursue a career in Physiotherapy through their Master’s programme.
I have also completed other qualifications related to health, fitness and pitch-side first aid, These include:
+ CEHF NCEF Fitness Instructor Qualification
+ IRFU SAFE Rugby Level 2 First Aid
+ NFQ Level 5 Nutrition Course
What kind of experience do you have?
During my time in the Master’s programme in UL, I was fortunate in that I got to experience Physiotherapy in many different settings in MSK, older adults and respiratory. For example, I was exposed to outpatient settings in ICPOP Thurles, post-op patients in Croom Orthopaedic hospital, and critically ill patients in the ICU in UHL.
I really have grown to appreciate the benefit of Physiotherapy for all demographics. I am particularly interested in the rehabilitation of athletic injuries (I am the current Burgess Hurling Team Physio), as well as lower back pain and orthopaedic conditions in older adults.
Throughout my MSc, I worked in The Workshop Health & Fitness in Newport, where some of you might recognise me from! Through my time in the gym, I developed a lot of transferable skills, which I have been able to utilise straight away at Gold Standard with the brilliant CSF, RENEW and Women’s Strength classes.
What are your professional interests / likes?
While interested in all aspects of Physiotherapy, I’m particularly interested in back pain and lower limb injuries, as I previously suffered a few injuries to these areas, and found them to be very debilitating.
Some of my family members have also experienced lower back pain for many years and avoided surgical interventions through regular physical activity and strength exercises. Seeing the benefit from Physiotherapy first-hand sparked my ambition to help people in the same way.
I also have a keen interest in Strength and Conditioning. Through my Undergraduate Degree in Sports & Exercise, and my time as a coach in The Workshop gym in Newport, I understand the importance of exercise for everyone, no matter their age.
I encourage everyone to take part in as much exercise as they can manage, and to adequately push themselves to get the most out of the exercise. You might notice this in the classes I instruct at Gold Standard!!
What kind of personal interests do you have?
I enjoy most forms of exercise but especially running and weightlifting. When I can, I like to get out for a hike too. I follow soccer, Gaelic football and - believe it or not – hurling!
I follow Liverpool in soccer and Monaghan in football, but the same can’t be said for hurling, as they were never on TV when I was growing up! I had to resort to watching the Munster championship, which happened to be much better!!
Outside of the above, I love to cook, socialise with my mates, play guitar and watch the odd movie.
Tell us something about yourself that others may not know?!
I have a few All-Ireland medals, but you’ll never guess what they are for! I’ll be sure to tell you in person - haha!
Anything else you'd like to add?
I got into this profession to get people back to health doing the things I personally enjoy - exercise and physical activity. I understand through my own injuries what it’s like to be forced off the pitch, and to even be bedridden for days. I want to get people back to their sports, hobbies, and day-to-day life pain-free, and I like to do it in a relaxed and welcoming environment, which can definitely be found at Gold Standard.
Best regards,
Conor
