David Ryan
MISCP; BSc (Hons)

Could you introduce yourself?!
Hi, my name is David Ryan from “the Mines” (Silvermines) and I’m a Physiotherapist, and a member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP)..
What / where did you study?
I started my education in Ardcroney National School (my uncle Martin was the principal, and he brought me in and out of school!). I then attended St. Joseph’s CBS Nenagh for my secondary education, before spending my final Leaving Cert year in Limerick Tutorial College, achieving the maximum 625 points in my exams.
Shortly after, I moved out of my family home (from Mondays to Fridays at least!) to study at University College Dublin. There I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiotherapy, achieving a First-Class Honours degree (1.1).
During and after my studies, I built on my college education with multiple additional courses including:
+ IRFU SAFE Rugby Level 2 Course – for pitch-side emergency management
+ Sports Taping and Strapping Course
+ Certification in Patient and Manual Handling
+ Basic Life Support (CPR & AED)
What kind of clinical experience do you have?
Whilst in Dublin, I gained over 1,000 hours of experience working across all walks of Physiotherapy. This included working with the most critical patients in an ICU, to those with musculoskeletal conditions and even patients after brain surgery.
I was fortunate to be able to gain clinical mileage in some of the largest Hospitals in Ireland, including ICU and Respiratory wards in Connolly Memorial Hospital, Neurosurgery wards in Beaumont Hospital and Surgical wards in St Vincent’s University Hospital.
I’ve also cared for patients in Community and Private settings, from older adult and rheumatology rehab in Our Lady’s Hospice Harold’s Cross to outpatients in Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore and Sports Physio Ireland, a private practice based in Dublin. It was these environments that really ignited my passion for working with older adults, chronic disease and sporting populations.
I have also been working with Silvermines GAA and camogie teams on the pitch-side during trainings and matchdays over the past three seasons. This experience has provided me with valuable insights into sports injuries, the physical and psychological demands of sports along with communicating with athletes and management teams.
What are your professional interests / likes?
My professional interests are strongly influenced by both my sporting background and the wide range of clinical experience I gained throughout my training and work placements. Having experienced injuries and received physiotherapy treatment first-hand, I understand the physical and mental challenges that can come with setbacks and rehabilitation. This has given me a particular interest in musculoskeletal issues, post-operative rehabilitation, sports injuries, and helping people return confidently to the activities they enjoy most.
Through my work in hospitals, private practice, and with local GAA teams, I have also developed a strong interest in exercise-based rehabilitation and promoting long-term physical wellbeing. I especially enjoy working with people of all ages to improve strength, mobility, confidence, and independence through personalised exercise programmes and group exercise tailored to each individual’s goals and lifestyle.
What kind of personal interests do you have?
When I’m not rehabbing my own injuries(!), I enjoy hurling with Silvermines GAA, and following all things GAA from local fixtures to supporting the Tipp hurlers. I also enjoy keeping up with any sport I come across, from tennis and golf to handball and soccer and anything in-between!
Along with sports, I also enjoy spending time with family and friends and travelling to different European cities with my friends from college.
From a young age, I have had a keen interest in technology, and I enjoy dabbling with computers and other devices, I even installed security cameras for my family home! I apply this IT proficiency within my physiotherapy practice, integrating technology where appropriate to enhance patient care and outcomes.
Tell us something about yourself that others may not know?!
I learned to play the guitar when I was in secondary school, and played it for my Junior Cert music practical. I may be a bit rusty but the chords for Wonderwall are ingrained in my muscle memory!
Anything else you'd like to add?
Supporting and treating members of my local community is a privilege that I value greatly. I aim to create a welcoming and reassuring environment for every patient, with personalised treatment plans tailored to individual goals and needs. My priority is to make you feel as confident and supported as possible throughout your rehabilitation journey and help you get back to doing what you love most.
Best regards,
David
