Could you introduce yourself?!

Hello, my name is Gavin Horan and I'm the latest recruit to the Gold Standard Team. In addition to being a Physio, I'm a qualified Athletic Therapist!

What / where did you study?

After finishing my Leaving Cert in Milltown in Kerry where I'm from, I attended the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) where I completed a four year Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Rehabilitation and Therapy.

Following the completion of my Undergraduate Degree, I continued my educational journey by completing a Master's Degree in Physiotherapy at the highly accredited Brunel University, London.

Since graduating as a Physio, I've completed a number of additional Post-Graduate courses. As a result, I now hold qualifications such as:

  • a Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling Certificate

  • a Pitch side Traumatology Graduate Diploma

  • a PHECC Emergency First Responder Course Certificate

  • a PHECC Cardiac First Responder Course Certificate

  • Sports Taping and First Aid Certification

  • Moving and Handling Certification

What kind of clinical experience do you have?
Both during and following my Undergraduate Degree, I gained experience in numerous different areas, working both clinically and pitch-side. Operating with a variety of sports sides (including Cork City FC and Duagh GAA) gave me a particularly great insight into the different demands that can be placed on individuals.

Away from sport, I was able to amass thousands of hours of clinical experience in a variety of settings; settings that included Private Practice here in Ireland, as well as both Respiratory and Neuro wards in the UK. I've also had the privilege to work in some of the most esteemed hospitals in London, including Northwick Park Hospital and the Royal London Hospital, which is the number one trauma unit in the UK.

My personal highlight (outside of working with Gold Standard of course!) was working with high-level athletes at The Peak in Porto, Portugal where I spent 6 months. The facility trebled up as a rehabilitation clinic, a sports science lab, and a strength and conditioning centre.

The clientele there included Olympic Athletes, as well as Professional Basketballers, Volleyballers and Footballers – some of whom are now plying their trade in the Premier League in England.

Having gained experience both abroad and at home in Kerry, I was looking for an environment which shared the same values and principles as myself. I wanted to work in a setting that looked at clients holistically and aimed to improve their quality of life beyond what they could have previously imagined. Enter Gold Standard Physiotherapy!

What are your professional interests?

I have a strong interest in all Physiotherapy disciplines, but Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy piques my interest above all else.

Throughout my life, I've played sport as often as I can. The unfortunate knock-on effect is I've had numerous injuries down the years, especially as a teenager. It was the recurring visits to Physiotherapists is where the fascination with the profession first began.

Physiotherapy is a social job and I particularly enjoy meeting new faces, hearing their stories, helping to manage their symptoms, and return them back to their lives better than when they first came to see me.

I find treating and helping patients - be it returning to sport, or simply moving around the house better, hugely rewarding and satisfying.

As well as Musculoskeletal Physio, I have a huge interest in Sports Science, not to mention General Health and Wellness.

What kind of personal interests do you have?

I’m a Sports enthusiast - my major fix would be Gaelic Football and Soccer!

As a Kerry man, I had no choice but to play Football throughout my childhood and teenage years! I am still travelling to play with my GAA club Milltown/Castlemaine – who are currently in Division 1 in Kerry.

I also had the privilege of representing Kerry, winning both a Munster and All-Ireland Junior Football title in 2018, which sealed 5 All Ireland's in a row for the County!

Now that I’m living and working in Tipp, I’ll be keeping a closer eye on the Hurling scene!

Away from sport, I enjoy hiking, sea-swimming and surfing – basically anything outdoors!

When I’m not outside, I like to read books, as well as spend time with friends and family.

Tell us one thing about yourself that others may not know?!

I’m a massive Newcastle United fan (before the money arrived too!). I’ve been to St. James Park twice – and both times they failed to score!

Anything else you'd like to add?

Attending Physiotherapy may seem a little bit intimidating at first, but please rest assured we honestly do have your best interests at heart here at Gold Standard. If you ever want to get in touch, please drop us a message and we will put you on the right path!

All the best,

Gavin
